DescriptionRelief from Palmyra with frontal bust of a woman elaborately dressed and bejeweled. She is clothed in a long-sleeved tunic; her head and shoulders are covered by a veil and mantle, which falls over the shoulders and crosses the upper torso. Her wealth is displayed in her rich attire, which includes a band with floral decoration across the forehead, turban with central knot, embroidery on the tunic, and much jewelry—earrings, multiple necklaces, a brooch with rosette, tab, key, and patterned bracelets and forearm clasps. In her left hand, which crosses her chest, she holds a spindle and distaff between the thumb and first two fingers; the other two digits are bent back. The right hand is raised to finger the edge of the cloak. Much attention is given to her face, particularly her large eyes. The irises and pupils are incised, the strong nose is flattened at the tip, and long locks fall to the shoulders.
