DescriptionThis head of Dionysos would have served as an appliqué or mask to decorate a vase. It was probably one of a pair made separately and attached to a situla (a pail) or krater below the handle, similar to a marble krater fragment in New York. The mitra, a head band or fillet that crosses the forehead and the wreath of ivy and grapes, along with the mustache and full beard characterize the head as Dionysos. The frontal head has regular features and full lips. The corkscrew curls of the beard are heavily worked, and may have been added separately.
