DescriptionSlightly smaller than life-sized head of a mature woman. She wears a flat band (visible on top) and a himation over her head, a portion of which is still attached by the flow-weld metal at her right. Her head is turned toward and inclined to the left. The hair, pulled back from a central part in wavy strands, is rendered in low relief and appears to have been worked in the wax before casting. The head has a strong brow ridge, sharply cut eyelids, and full lips; thenose continues the straight line of the forehead. Certain adjustments—the left eye is larger and rounder than the right, the left ear and nostril are less detailed than the right—were made because the left side would have been less visible than the right. Two shallow grooves indicate “Venus rings” on the neck.
