DescriptionThe irregular shape and battered condition of this object suggest that it may first have been used as a stone hammer, attached to a shaft. The off-center hole contributes to its early appearance. A similar object found at Tepe Gawra in northern Iraq, made of granite and dated circa the fourth millennium BCE, shows a similarly beaten surface.
