DescriptionThis head is a fine example of Greek sculpture of the late Archaic period (c. 500 BCE). The eyes and mouth exhibit stylized “Archaic” features, but are set more naturally into the face than in earlier figures, and the chin displays a rounded form that heralds the beginning of the Classical style. Characteristics of East Greece include the very smooth treatment of the surfaces, such as the thin eyelids, and especially the veil that covers all of the hair over the forehead and crown. The identity as a woman is suggested only by the disc earring that she wears.On View
