DescriptionThe form was inspired by vases made during the Han Dynasty in China, and by forms made at Jugtown over the past century. The Stoneware clay body, formulated at Jugtown, is based on local clays, and the glazes used were developed by Pam Owens. The vase was first glazed in a Copper glaze, then a Chrome Oxide glaze was applied at the top. The Copper glaze is volatile, and produces a mottling of colors based on the atmosphere inside the kiln during the firing, which varied between reduced oxygen and oxygen rich. The Chrome glaze is more stable, and produces the vibrant greens at the top of the vase.
