DescriptionAn expanse of ocean. Hands, raised above the surface by a person invisible below, hold up a schooner-rigged ship. To the right a woman, apparently African, beneath the water. To the left, in the distance: minute caricaturized figures of a pipe-smoking European, and a feather-crowned `native¿ holding up a plant stalk (tobacco?) The first in a series of six prints of various shapes and sizes, narrating aspects of the European colonization of the Americas and the slave trade.
