DescriptionJug, blue-and-white, Arita ware, ca. 1670-90. decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with transitional style decoration; the handle is pierced at the top to accommodate the fitting for a hinged metal lid. On the body three cartouches are surrounded by arabesque (karakusa) decoration. Starting from the handle and going from left to right, the three cartouches contain 1. Landscape with trees, rocks and ten birds; 2. Landscape with houses among hills, a man with a fan and parasol, and a young attendant who turns to look at a fleeing dog. 3. Landscape with circular house among palm[?] trees and mountains, sun in sky, 7 birds.
