DescriptionA moderately- sized, vigorously-executed oil painting. It may be a modello for a larger composition.Maratti's painting represents the opening scene in Virgil's Aeneid (1, 50-86): Juno implores Aeolus, the King of the Winds, to raise the winds against Aeneas and the Trojan fleet. Maratti follows the text closely. He shows Aeolus as a king holding a scepter and standing on a promontory. Juno arrives in flight and points to the Trojan fleet in the distance. The four winds (personified), pent up, are just bursting forth at Aeolus' command.
