Descriptionabstract figural sculpture.
In Sentinel #2, Lipton explores the theme of the universal hero. Heroes were a frequent subject for writers and artists of the time, reflecting the Abstract Expressionists' interest in mythology, philosophy, and the universal qualities of art.
During the 1950s Lipton's work became more figurative and epic, and he created a number of vertical, heroic figures with titles such as Prophet, Herald, and Pioneer. Sentinel # 2 is a variation on a larger piece from the same year in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. While Sentinel #2 reflects many similar forms, it is noteworthy for the very tactile quality of its shimmering bronze surface, on which the artist's touch is apparent.
