Painting in India has taken many forms, but the paintings most often seen outside India are the small works on paper usually called 'Indian miniatures', Miniatures were made both as independent works of art and as illustrations to hand-written books. They include portraits, scenes of daily life, and subjects from religion, legend, and history.
