The Southern Part of Heaven: Drawing on MemoriesSunday, May 08, 1994 - Sunday, July 31, 1994

This exhibit was planned as part of the Ackland's participation in the Bicentennial Exhibition. It featured about 20 original drawings by the American illustrator, William Meade Prince and music and lyrics by the late folksinger, Elizabeth Cotten, who also grew up in this area.

William Meade Prince and Elizabeth Cotten were two artists, born the same year, who spent portions of their childhood in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Later in life, both recorded memories of that childhood--Cotten in a series of taped interviews and Prince in the text and illustrations of his book, 'The Southern Part of Heaven.'

In this exhibition Prince's drawings, Cotten's music, and the words of both were combined to offer a picture of this community early in the twentieth century. It is not a history of the town, but a view formed in the memories of two individuals--a European-American man and an African-American woman.
